Edge Wireless,

I have been an Edge customer since January of 2006. My experience as an Edge customer has had some positive as well as negative aspects.

First, the positive aspects: I enjoyed your selection of phones, and have enjoyed using my Sony Ericsson 520a. Your rate plans are competitive with other local carriers, and your partnership with Cingular Wireless, in my experience, has meant that I enjoy excellent network coverage outside of my home area.

I have encountered some major bummers with my Edge service in Humboldt County, though. Local network coverage is places is spotty and poor. On the HSU campus, where I work and in Arcata, where I live, coverage is excellent, but in some other places, my friends with other carriers have had network coverage when I haven't. Specifically, I am thinking of a region between Crescent City and the Smith River, as well as sections along Old Arcata Road, as well as other regions which I cannot recall specifically. When I first began using Edge service in January of 2005, I was told that certain dark areas of the local Edge network would be eliminated as the transition to a GSM network was made. Is this transition still taking place? I thought I was told this would happen sooner.

Another complaint I have with my Edge service is with the voicemail. With my previous services, Spring and U.S. Cellular, I set choose my voicemail settings so that I would be required to enter my voicemail password to access messages from my mobile phone for added security, or for my voicemail to be password-unprotected. I prefer to access my voicemail without entering my password. This allows much more convenient access to my voicemail — it is a pain to have to take the phone away from my ear, and enter my password before I can listen to my messages, especially when I am biking, walking, or really doing anything in life.

New voicemail alerts are frequently delivered late, several minutes after I turn on my phone. This is better than my Sprint service, through which I would frequently receive very deferred voicemail alerts, but with U.S. Cellular, new voicemail alerts were almost delivered immediately after I turned on my phone.

I expected Edge to be on par with U.S. Cellular, the local service provider I have been most satisfied with, but I must say that, while your staff is helpful and Edge has many strong points, the the current problems with the Edge network are a major detractor from choosing your service. I would not recommend it to friend and I will not renew my contract, which expires in one year, unless your network coverage problems are solved.
